In my spare time, I often skipped seeing movies; friends; dating and weddings; eating meals; even stayed up late many, many nights so I could quench my thirst for sales and persuasion mastery. I began devouring every single sales book, recording and seminar I could find. And I got good. Really, really good at it – at least by any normal persons standards. No matter how much I studied though, it still felt like I was rolling the dice every time I got in front of a prospect.
Then it happened. Light bulbs went off. Feelings of excitement began to permeate every part of me as I talked with sales veterans, the vulnerable masters of sales and persuasion with extremely successful career histories. It took quite a while to meet with them, build a relationship, and really learn how to do what it is they do. I used to think I could figure it out on my own. I used to think that older people didn’t know what the latest best techniques were. Then it dawned on me. The seasoned professionals have been through everything I was thinking and had figured out the best ways to handle every situation. I drooled at the thought of being able to be as good as they are.
Try to comprehend what it would be like to have access to the best sales professionals that make millions a year and take the best from each of them. Compare and contrast what they do until finally discovering what they are doing that is so effective. Some are highly educated; some have barely a high school education. Some knew consciously, exactly what they were doing, most didn’t. Some spoke perfect English; others were just plain folks that were fun to be around. I literally would beg some of them to teach me what they were doing. I was their lab experiment until I absorbed and could explain and teach and successfully apply in the real world all that they applied. The people I learned from were far more interested in making sales than becoming famous. I stripped away the fluff and got rid of anything that was even remotely construed as sales-like or slick.
Some of these super-experienced sales people were incredibly charming. Some talked in such a way that you felt like you were friends forever. Others made it feel like they could read your mind. Most of them could find hot buttons in mere moments and make me feel really good as they linked my emotions and buying strategies to their products and services. I watched, listened, and experienced everything they did, adding each person’s excellent skill set to my own. Lots of practice, lots of performance and testing. Many failures, many wins and successes.
During my intensive odyssey towards sales and persuasion nirvana, a part of me realized something deeply profound and it was now starting to happen. I became aware of exactly what to do in all sales situations because I was absorbing and applying everything I could from the sales masters. I no longer gambled. I could see where their minds were taking them as they spoke their words. The prospects’ emotions were waves I could adjust in intensity up or down and utilize those waves to guide them where they needed to go. I learned to align the sale along the same direction their waves of emotions were taking them, and they started buying from me at triple the rates of the next closest salesperson.
While I was learning, I would sometimes slip back to my old ways because I knew I was right in what I was saying. But that isn’t what the seasoned professionals were telling me. They kept telling me to get out of my old head and only listen to the customer and what they wanted. Geez Louise, that was the hard part. When I finally learned enough to finally have the ears to hear and the eyes to see, everything started to make sense.
I finally adopted my most powerful internal mantra. Do you want to be right or do you want to be rich (or make more full commission sales)? No more gambling. I can now hear what the customer tells me they want to hear and I tell that to them. I can see what they want me to show them and I show it to them. I can cause them to feel what they are describing as what they want to feel.
And when I give people the visions they want to see, the words they want to hear, and the emotions they crave, they open their wallets and give me sale after sale.
My delivery now is so smooth and “non sales-like” that people think it is their idea to ask me for the sale. Have you ever found a person that was so good that you just went along with what they said? That’s the level of skill I posses and will now effectively coach you to possess, apply, and deliver.
I teach the hidden, almost lost knowledge and wisdom that dozens of well season sales professionals with 50 years of sales experience apply without even consciously understanding what they are doing. Imagine having 50 years of sales skills and experience without having to work for 50 years to possess it. I’ve broken it down, analyzed it, and tested everything in the real world. I’ve sold to Marriott, Wells Fargo, multiple United States government agencies, dozens of small businesses, sold on the streets in dozens of large and small cities, and many more companies and locations.

The people who practice the slight edge (doing everything to get the edge to get ahead) and the people who are highly action-oriented are the best people for me to coach. The people who continue to move ahead and are determined to , right now, move ahead. In this letter, you’ve become aware of the advantages of applying my skills and the slight edge over the competition, of applying more sales skills, of incrementally and consistently getting better sales skills. And that slight edge and action-orientation found by having me as your sales coach translate into more sales, more of the green stuff, more moola.
And then there are the rest of the salespeople; plain old average and staying there. Average salespeople, untrained, are the gamblers. They roll the dice for their sales, never understanding what makes a sale really work and how to repeat it time and time again. You may have noticed the dice I’ve attached to this letter. Those dice are given to you to be the only gambling you should ever do. You should never roll dice on a sales call, ever.
In sales, you need to integrate proven techniques with psychology. Firmly align your intentions with what the prospect is able to buy. There is no reason to roll dice once you understand how sales occur and a solid method to keep your skills sharp.

By the way, a sales coach needs to be a different person than a sales manager. The sales manager has a responsibility to the company and to the products. Your only responsibility should be in making as much commission as possible, and that comes from closing more sales. The sales coach has to have the highest level of sales and persuasion skills available anywhere and have a proven track record and capability to effectively teach and install super-effective sales skills. That’s what it is really all about, is it not?
Once you have the highest level sales skills installed in you, which are gained through continuous, repetitive, on-going practicing and coaching, the ability to sell becomes transportable to any products or services and increases your capabilities in all aspects of your life. That’s pretty obvious – salespeople can sell anything once their skills are sufficiently developed and consistently kept sharp. Pretty soon, you’ll be looking for sales that generate higher commissions because sales will become so automatic you’ll want to make sure you are making the most money you can per sale.
To continue on with the gambling analogy, take the dice and arrange them so you have two sixes facing upward. This signifies the highest numeric combination possible with the easiest effort. Wouldn’t it be great to cause your sales to be this easy? Setting up the sale will be as easy as setting up the dice to double sixes. Which would you rather do: arrange the dice and the odds the way you want them or roll them and take chances like the average person does with their sales?
I remember in my early sales career, managers who would tell me constantly to read product information and brochures and the sales would come more often. They would also tell me to close, close, close and sell certain products, and they would tell me how they closed deals. It wasn’t enough for me. I couldn’t close the way they did because I wasn’t them. They didn’t know how to teach how sales are really made, integrating social skills, psychology, (dare I say hypnosis), classic techniques, as well as new discoveries.
I would have done anything to have a sales coach who could really explain, embed, and teach sales skills to prod, provoke, inspire and motivate me to learn and successfully apply techniques and refine my skills a little bit each time.
